  1. Thank you for examining Melodia for Sound Cards ("Melodia/SC").
  2.  
  3. Melodia/SC is an algorithmic composing programs.  It is an attempt to
  4. free musical artists from the tyranny of a tradition that grew out of
  5. the physical limitations of the medium, just as photography freed
  6. visual artists.  It does not try to replace the traditional methods;
  7. but it does offer a completely new medium with new rules and with
  8. different strengths and limitations.
  9.  
  10. You compose music by making connections to processes that are running
  11. in real time, by modifing the processes as you listen to the
  12. changes.  You get interesting simple patterns almost instantly, and
  13. then step by step you can go on to develop the patterns into
  14. compositions of virtually unlimited complexity and subtlity.

  16. There are three documentation files that you should print:

  18. INTRO.TXT - brief overview and introduction to Melodia/SC.
  19. TUTOR.TXT - step by step tutorial to get you started.
  20. MANUAL.TXT - full, in depth documentaiton of Melodia/SC.

  22. Melodia/SC also has online help:  When you pass the mouse cursor over
  23. any active area of the screen (a command or control) with the right
  24. mouse button pressed, Melodia/SC prints a message at the bottom of the
  25. screen telling you about it.

  27. Before running Melodia/SC for the first time, you must first run the
  28. INSTALL program.  This installs the working MS.EXE and
  29. subdirectories in place, in the same directory as INSTALL.

  31. Melodia/SC will work on any Adlib compatible sound card that uses the
  32. Yamaha FM chip.  If your sound card has one of the newer FM chips
  33. Melodia/SC will make use of the extra capability.

  35. This Unregistered version of Melodia/SC is fully functional but
  36. somewhat less convenient than the Registered version because it does
  37. not allow you to erase files or create new files from within Melodia
  38. unless they are named "DEFAULT."  You can use the DOS comand line to
  39. manually rename or erase your work files without restriction, but if
  40. you are doing this, you are definitely ready to register.

  42. Note that when the tutorial indicates you should create a new file
  43. or rename the current workspace, you should ignore the instructions
  44. and select ERASE to erase DEFAULT and/or clear the workspace.

  46. Melodia/SC is supplied as is.  The author, John Dunn, disclaims all
  47. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the
  48. warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.  The
  49. author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential,
  50. which may result from the use of Melodia/SC.

  52. Melodia/SC is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
  53. user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your friends, but be
  54. sure to give only the full package (including this file) not altered
  55. in any way, and not as part of another system.

  57. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal
  58. computer users with quality software without high prices, and yet to
  59. provide incentive for programmers to continue to develop new
  60. products.  If you find this program useful and find that you are
  61. using Melodia/SC and continue to use Melodia/SC after a reasonable
  62. trial period, you must make a registration payment of $19.00 to the
  63. author at the address given below.

  65. The $19.00 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  66. computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just like a
  67. book.  An example is that this software may be used by any number of
  68. people and may be freely moved from one computer location to another,
  69. so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location
  70. while it is being used at another.  Just as a book cannot be read by
  71. two different persons at the same time.

  73. Commercial users of Melodia/SC must register and pay for their copies
  74. of Melodia/SC within 30 days of first use or their license is
  75. withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting the
  76. author at the address given below.

  79. contact the author at the address given below.

  81. You are encouraged to pass a copy of Melodia/SC along to your friends
  82. for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their copy if they
